Context And Mission
We are looking for a climate scientist to work on the development of decadal climate predictions for sectors such as wind energy. The selected candidate will work with state-of-the-art climate predictions to obtain relevant climate indicators for the aforementioned sectors at both global and local spatial scales. This position presents the opportunity to work alongside leading international climate scientists delivering cutting-edge climate science and climate services across Europe.
Key Duties
Perform user-oriented research, understand user needs and facilitate technology transfer
Actively participate in the management of projects (teleconferences, workshops, meetings, reporting and writing deliverables)
Perform statistical data analyses and disseminate the results in peer-reviewed scientific papers and international conferences
Teamwork: Interaction with scientists in the group and the department to favor synergies
Requirements
Education: Degree in Physics, Environmental Sciences, Mathematics (or equivalent); Ph. D. in atmospheric sciences, applied statistics or related field
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience:
Experience handling, analysing and validating large climate model datasets
Experience with climatic statistical analyses
Proficiency in scientific programming in a suitable language (e.g. R, Python, Matlab) and familiarity with working in a UNIX environment
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, especially for scientific publications
Ability to work in a professional environment within a multidisciplinary and international team
Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience:
Experience working with climate predictions/climate change projections
Experience working with climate extreme indices or bioclimatic indicators
Knowledge on statistical downscaling, multi-model combination techniques, bias adjustments techniques or tropical/extratropical teleconnections will be positively evaluated
Competences:
Problem-solving, pro-active, result-oriented work attitude
Capability to work in an international and fast-paced work environment
Good communication skills
Conditions
The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, and support for relocation procedures
Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project
Salary: competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
Starting date: 01/10/2024

Early in 2004 the Ministry of Education and Science (Spanish Government), Generalitat de Catalunya (local Catalan Government) and Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) took the initiative of creating a National Supercomputing Center in Barcelona. BSC-CNS (Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación) is the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain and was officially constituted in April 2005. BSC-CNS manages MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, located at the Torre Girona chapel. The mission of BSC-CNS is to investigate, develop and manage information technology in order to facilitate scientific progress. With this aim, special dedication has been taken to areas such as Computational Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Computer Applications in Science and Engineering.
